World Environment Day

Today is 5th of June when world celebrates environment or nature to be precise, we plant trees to commemorate the day but is that enough? Are we absolved of our sins of destroying our environment by this one act?

Humans cut down about 15 billion trees in a year so how is it justified? The saplings we plant may not even grow up to be a tree, do we take care of it once we plant it, do we nurture it to its fruition? If not how can we be sure if it survived the brutality of its surrounding systems like grazing, vandalism, mindless uprooting by miscreants, or clearing it for other human activities?

Let’s talk about plastic, about 10 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the world’s ocean every year which is killing the marine life and has endangered their ecosystems. Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Sharks are dangerously moving to the threatened lists of species, to name a few, there are countless species going extinct due to plastic. Every year we add to the IUCN’s list of most endangered species on earth.

Microplastic has also found it’s way to our foods and drinks at an alarming rate, are we going to wipe out our existence hence? If so how did we happen to be on the top of the food chain, how did we happen to consider ourselves the smartest on the planet?

Let us think and act on it before it’s too late,

Let’s declare a war on plastic, at least ponder on this year’s tagline of the World Environment Day “IF YOU CAN’T REUSE IT, REFUSE IT”
